About the Enhanced Connecticut Notary Handbook

Connecticut does things its own way — you’re appointed by the Secretary of the State for five years, there’s no bond and no required journal, a seal isn’t even required, and remote notarization works only on paper. Most new notaries are left piecing it together from the statute and the state manual. This guide fixes that. We rewrote Connecticut notary law into clear, plain English, then added a complete professional toolkit you’ll use on your very first job: certificate forms, a printable invoice, loose certificates, journal pages, and a 30-day plan to land clients.

Built on the Law — Not a Private Handbook

The explanations here are written in our own words; the certificate forms follow the statutory forms in the Connecticut General Statutes, which are public and free for any notary to use. You’ll learn what trips new Connecticut notaries up: that you’re appointed by the Secretary of the State for a 5-year term, that there’s an exam built into the application, that no bond and no journal are required, the surprising seal rule (a seal is optional, but ‘Notary Public’ and ‘My commission expires’ are not), the $5-per-act fee cap plus mileage, how paper-only remote notarization works, and the fact that Connecticut is an attorney state for real-estate closings. It’s the reference you’ll keep open on your desk.

📝 Fillable & printable

Open it in the free Adobe Reader and type into the fields, or print the forms blank and complete them by hand. Works on PC, Mac, phone, or tablet — and it’s yours to reuse for your entire appointment.

Who it’s for

Frequently Asked Questions

What notaries ask before downloading.

Is this the official Connecticut notary manual?

No. This is an independently produced, enhanced study and reference guide. It is not the official Connecticut Notary Public Manual and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the State of Connecticut or the Connecticut Secretary of the State. It rewrites the law into plain English and adds original tools and forms.

Does Connecticut require a notary seal?

No. Connecticut law does not require a seal or stamp. But every certificate must show your name, the words “Notary Public,” and “My commission expires (date)” near your signature. If you use a seal, it must contain your name, “Notary Public,” “Connecticut,” and your expiration date.

Can Connecticut notaries do remote notarization?

Yes, but only on paper. Effective October 1, 2023, a Connecticut notary may notarize a tangible (paper) record for a signer who appears by audio-video technology and mails the original document to the notary. Remote notarization is not allowed for land records (deeds, mortgages), wills, or codicils.

What’s included?

A fillable PDF covering Connecticut notary law in plain English; the statutory certificate forms (individual and representative acknowledgments, a jurat, and a copy certification); a printable notary invoice; loose certificates; binder-ready journal pages; a 30-day marketing quick-start; and a glossary.

How much can a Connecticut notary charge?

Connecticut caps notary fees at $5.00 per notarial act. You may charge less or nothing, and you may add an optional travel fee of $0.35 per mile if agreed with the signer in advance. The $5 maximum also applies to remote acts.
