About the Enhanced Iowa Notary Handbook
Iowa keeps the bar to becoming a notary refreshingly low — no bond, no exam, and only a $30 application fee through the Secretary of State’s Fast Track Filing system. The trade-offs are a shorter 3-year term and a few distinctive Iowa rules that trip people up. This guide makes all of it clear. We rewrote Iowa notary law into plain English, then added a complete professional toolkit you’ll use on your very first job: every short-form certificate, a printable invoice, loose certificates, journal pages, and a 30-day plan to land clients.
Built on the Law — Not a Private Handbook
The explanations here are written in our own words; the certificate forms are the short forms set out in Iowa Code Chapter 9B (the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts, 2018), which is public and free for any notary to use. You’ll learn what trips new Iowa notaries up: that you’re commissioned by the Secretary of State for 3 years (1 year for non-residents qualifying through Iowa employment), that there’s no bond and no exam, exactly what your stamp must say (the distinctive “Notarial Seal” and “Iowa” wording in Iowa Code 9B.17), that Iowa uses a reasonable-fee standard (no statutory per-act cap), that Iowa notaries may certify copies, and that Remote Online Notarization requires a separate registration plus 10-year retention of the AV recording. It’s the reference you’ll keep open on your desk.
📝 Fillable & printable
Open it in the free Adobe Reader and type into the fields, or print the forms blank and complete them by hand. Works on PC, Mac, phone, or tablet — and it’s yours to reuse for your entire commission.
Who it’s for
Brand-new Iowa notaries who want the law in plain English, mobile notaries leveling up, and loan signing agents who want the legal reference and the business forms together in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions
What notaries ask before downloading.
Is this the official Iowa notary handbook?
No. This is an independently produced, enhanced study and reference guide. It is not the official Handbook for Iowa Notaries Public and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the State of Iowa or the Iowa Secretary of State. It rewrites the law into plain English and adds original tools and forms.
How long is an Iowa notary commission, and is there an exam or bond?
An Iowa notary commission is 3 years for Iowa residents (1 year for non-residents who qualify through Iowa employment). There is no exam, no mandatory training, and no bond required for a traditional Iowa commission — just the $30 application fee through the Secretary of State’s Fast Track Filing system.
What can an Iowa notary charge per act?
Iowa Code does not set a maximum per-act fee — Iowa uses a “reasonable fee” standard. You may charge what is reasonable for your market and may also charge actual travel costs by agreement with the client. Best practice: post your rates and agree on price up front.
What must an Iowa notary stamp include?
Under Iowa Code 9B.17, your stamp must show your name as commissioned, the words “Notarial Seal” and “Iowa,” the words “Commission Number” followed by your number, and the words “My Commission Expires” followed by your expiration date (or a blank line you hand-write each time). It must be capable of being copied with the record.
Does Iowa allow Remote Online Notarization (RON)?
Yes. To perform RON in Iowa you must already hold an active commission, complete the Secretary of State-approved RON course through the National Notary Association, submit a separate RON registration to the Secretary of State, and use a state-approved technology vendor. The audio-visual recording of each session must be retained for at least 10 years.
Is this legal advice?
