About the Enhanced Mississippi Notary Handbook
Mississippi has held the line on a traditional notary model: a 4-year term, a $5,000 surety bond, a REQUIRED stamp on every act, and — since 2021 — a REQUIRED chronological journal of every notarial act. Fees are capped at $5 per act. And Mississippi is one of the very few states that does NOT yet authorize Remote Online Notarization (RON); every Mississippi notarization must happen in person. This guide makes all of it clear. We rewrote Mississippi notary law into plain English, then added a complete professional toolkit you’ll use on your very first job: every customary form, a printable invoice, loose certificates, journal pages, and a 30-day plan to land clients.
Built on the Law — Not a Private Handbook
The explanations here are written in our own words; the certificate forms follow the requirements of the Mississippi Code (Title 25, Chapter 33) and the Mississippi Notary Rules and Regulations, which are public and free for any notary to use. You’ll learn what trips new Mississippi notaries up: that you’re commissioned by the Secretary of State for 4 years, that the application fee is $25 and you need a $5,000 surety bond, that a stamp is REQUIRED with your name, ‘Notary Public,’ ‘State of Mississippi,’ and expiration, that a journal is REQUIRED for every act (since 2021 — physical or electronic), that the per-act fee is capped at $5 (travel by agreement), and that RON is NOT authorized in Mississippi — every notarization must be in person. It’s the reference you’ll keep open on your desk.
📝 Fillable & printable

Frequently Asked Questions
What notaries ask before downloading.
Is this the official Mississippi notary handbook?
No. This is an independently produced, enhanced study and reference guide. It is not the official Mississippi Notary Public Manual and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the State of Mississippi or the Mississippi Secretary of State. It rewrites the law into plain English and adds original tools and forms.
How long is a Mississippi notary commission, and what does it take?
A Mississippi notary commission is 4 years. You must obtain a $5,000 surety bond from a Mississippi-licensed surety, apply through the Secretary of State’s portal with a $25 application fee, and take the oath of office. There is no exam and no mandatory training.
Does Mississippi require a stamp and a journal?
Yes to both. A stamp (inked rubber or embosser, reproducible) is REQUIRED on every paper notarization and must include your name, ‘Notary Public,’ ‘State of Mississippi,’ and your commission expiration. A chronological journal of every notarial act has been REQUIRED since 2021 — one active journal (physical or electronic).
What can a Mississippi notary charge per act?
Mississippi caps the per-act fee at $5. Travel may be agreed separately with the client. Disclose your rates in advance; mobile and after-hours notaries typically earn most of their income from travel charges and high-volume signings.
Can a Mississippi notary perform Remote Online Notarization (RON)?
No. Under current Mississippi law, RON is NOT authorized — every notarization must be performed with the signer physically present before the notary. Watch sos.ms.gov for any future changes; until then, do NOT use a ‘remote’ platform to notarize a Mississippi-jurisdiction act.
What’s included in the Mississippi Notary Handbook?
A fillable PDF covering Mississippi notary law in plain English; every customary certificate form (acknowledgment, representative acknowledgment, jurat, signature witnessing, and copy certification); a printable notary invoice with the $5 cap built in; loose certificates; binder-ready pages for Mississippi’s required journal; a 30-day marketing quick-start; and a glossary of notary terms.
