About the Enhanced Nebraska Notary Handbook

Nebraska has held the line on traditional notary practice with a few distinctive wrinkles: an EXAM is required for every new notary, the bond is $15,000, and your stamp must include the exact wording ‘State of Nebraska, General Notary’ (or ‘State of Nebraska, General Notarial’) — not the more typical ‘Notary Public.’ Term is 4 years, traditional fees are capped at $5 per act, and RON has been authorized since July 2020 under the Online Notary Public Act (separate $50 registration + RON test).

Built on the Law — Not a Private Handbook

The explanations are written in our own words; the certificate forms follow the requirements of Nebraska Revised Statutes Chapter 64 and the Online Notary Public Act. You’ll learn what trips new Nebraska notaries up: that you must pass an exam and obtain a $15,000 surety bond from an incorporated surety, that the application fee is $30 and the term is 4 years, that your stamp must say ‘State of Nebraska’ and ‘General Notary’ (not ‘Notary Public’), that fees are capped at $5 per traditional act and $25 per RON act, that journals are recommended-not-required for paper but required for RON (electronic journal + AV recording, 10-year retention), and that RON requires a $50 SOS registration plus a RON-specific test. It’s the reference you’ll keep open on your desk.

📝 Fillable & printable

Open it in the free Adobe Reader and type into the fields, or print the forms blank and complete them by hand. Works on PC, Mac, phone, or tablet — and it’s yours to reuse for your entire commission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What notaries ask before downloading.

Is this the official Nebraska notary handbook?

No. This is an independently produced, enhanced study and reference guide. It is not the official Nebraska Notary Handbook and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the State of Nebraska or the Nebraska Secretary of State.

How long is a Nebraska notary commission, and is there an exam?

A Nebraska notary commission is 4 years. Yes — Nebraska requires a notary EXAM for every new notary. You must also obtain a $15,000 incorporated-surety bond and pay a $30 commission fee through the Secretary of State.

What must a Nebraska notary stamp include?

An OFFICIAL INK STAMP SEAL is required. It must show ‘State of Nebraska’ and either ‘General Notary’ OR ‘General Notarial,’ your name as commissioned, and your commission expiration. Nebraska’s title-of-office on certificates is ‘General Notary’ — not the more common ‘Notary Public.’

What can a Nebraska notary charge per act?

Nebraska caps traditional fees at $5 per notarial act and remote (RON) acts at $25 per act. Travel may be agreed separately with the client.

Does Nebraska allow Remote Online Notarization (RON)?

Yes. The Online Notary Public Act has authorized RON in Nebraska since July 2020. To add RON, hold an active commission, pass a RON-specific test, register with the SOS, pay the $50 RON registration fee, and use an approved platform with identity-proofing and AV recording. You must be physically located in Nebraska when you perform the remote act.

What’s included in the Nebraska Notary Handbook?

A fillable PDF covering Nebraska notary law in plain English; every customary certificate form; a printable notary invoice with the $5/$25 caps built in; loose certificates with the ‘General Notary’ stamp reminder; binder-ready notary journal pages; a 30-day marketing quick-start; and a glossary of notary terms.
